Excellent value for money buy. Highly recommended!

This phone is not top of the line for flip phones, not by a long shot. But, it is very compact, well built, very slim and fits almost any pocket. The faux leather is a very cool finish, and most important the front screen gives a neat summary of what the widgets are popping up - thus reducing screen time. I think reduction of screen time is this phone's biggest USP. Note: This phones only ONE physical nano SIM, the other SIM has to be an e-SIM. Battery is good, brightness is excellent, the fold crease vanishes at the right angle (if you know how fold screens work). Those who DONT know how fold displays work - will have some discomfort, but I recommend not losing patience and work with the product. Android 15 works blazing fast on this phone. Highly recommended for those who want to reduce screen time and carry a compact phone.

I have waited almost 20 years to write this review

Imagine this. You are an 11 year old impressionable kid, whose favourite uncle gets a shiny Moto Razr in 2005. You’ve seen the ads. Its sleek. It has two screens. And when a character in a movie you’re watching emphatically slams their phone shut, it’s one of the coolest things you have ever seen. So much so you do buy a lot of Motorola phones as you grow up. And why wont you? They come with the best software experience, great hardware, and an overall great experience. So, do you wait for a few reviews, a few real world tests, or do you get a phone you don’t really need, because you are a stubborn man child who thinks another purchase will “fill” that hole which is there in his heart? In this age of instant delivery, you’ll obviously do the latter. One quick exchange later, this is now your phone The General Overview: Software and hardware The Phone is really, really cool. The main purpose it serves for me is when I need to pretend to be on a phone call to avoid talking to someone, and slam it shut to highlight a point like a badly written Bollywood bad boy “God damn it mere pass iss sab ke lie time nahi hai damn it. Mujhe ek zaroori meeting mai jaana hai damn it” *Slams phone Shut*. People either stare cause they find this really cool, or they think I am crazy. The hinge is great, I can prop this up at many angles. No complaints there. It comes with a single simcard slot and an optional additional eSim. The sim tray however has enough space for a dual sim case, they just didn’t use it like what the hell guys. SD Card hi dedete. The outer screen is terrific. Unlike the Samsung Z flip 5, you can run every app on the front screen out of the box. You need to select the apps you want to run there, and they run natively well. If the squarish aspect ratio doesn’t work, you can just auto rotate to get a more traditional aspect ratio automatically. (You can keep two distinct autorotate preferences on the internal and external screens). Open the phone up, and they run smoothly 9 out of 10 times. Still a couple of tweaks are needed tho. The settings are robust and offer so many customization options that you can get lost in optimising every bit about your front and inner screens. Other than all that, I REALLY love the small software tweaks they’ve made. The music playing animation on the cover screen really reminds you of the Windows Media player/winamp days of the old. That cute bear in tent and stand modes really brings out the fun in day to day use. The software and hardware makes me say something I haven’t used for Motorola since Google stripped them off their patents and sold them off to Lenovo: POLISHED. Hardware is something I am always concerned about when it comes to foldables. It’s a phone that bends for crying out loud. And moto hardware hasn’t historically been the toughest: My Moto G, Moto X play, Moto g5 plus, all lost due to a broken charging port. Same weren’t the issue with my Moto One Power and Moto X4. The hardware here feels solid. The hinge is very sturdy. The phone is IP X8 rated for water protection. But we live in dusty cities, so be mindful of keeping the hinge dust free. I have made it a habit to clean it as often as possible, but again I am a nut case. The front is gorilla glass victus protected, and the back is Vegan leather (it means non-animal based leather and not leather made out of Vegans). It is REALLY good to hold without a cover, and the cover they supply with the box is a hard plastic case and not a flimsy rubber case. The entire casing is made from tough aluminium. Opening the flip one handed is really easy, however I never do that as I need to ensure I make a big deal opening this phone each time using both hands to justify my purchase to myself and the world. I love it when people look at me opening this phone. (Have to justify a purchase haha) Really love the Green colour I purchased, and they will also later release the hot pink version (for the ones who remember the one Paris Hilton Carried way back when) The Outer screen is bright and has a 165 Hz refresh rate. It feels incredibly smooth and snappy to use. Unfold that to a NEAR glass like screen on the inside. No dead pixels so far but this has been only a week, lol. Also 165 Hz. Also really bright. Netflix does run HDR. Speakers are really loud. Buttons are clicky and the cameras have the megapixels on their side at least. Fun Fact: The magnets holding the phone shut are so strong this sticks to a magsafe charger without any issues. (I checked, doesn’t have Qi 2). Cameras: Moto Cameras have never been the best. And the cameras aren’t the best part of this. This is not to say that they are bad in any way. Motorola has really done some software magic where photos outside look really good. Not as good as a Samsung or an iPhone, but definitely not as bad as they used to be. Human colours could use a little work tho, as my lips are not as pink as they look here and I look like a gutka eating don (I am not a gutka eating don or even a henchman). The low light performance across both the normal and telephoto lens are great, as they are both 50 MP this year. I really miss the ultrawide tho, as I don’t really take that many portraits. But the portraits are fine. The telephoto is only 2x, so I wonder if they could’ve just slapped an ultrawide as a regular lense can also crop 2x easily. Battery: Battery life is great. I punish my phones. Constant maps use, 5G on and media always playing. Should last you all day. Best part is this charges really quickly. Batteries on foldables are never the best but seriously this one surprised me. Conclusion Foldables still aren't for everyone you still got to treat them more gently and you're still making a camera sacrifice but damned if these aren't the most fun, pocketable, and Innovative phones on Android right now. In a world of risk averse competitors reheating last year's smartphones over and over again Motorola continues to be the breath of fresh air I need to stay excited about this category even after all these years.

8 months update - Screen tore due to use

I loved this phone .. loved it's looks and loved it functionality. Even though the camera was really really bad and took like5 seconds to start. I still loved the phone. But the flip did not even last for 8 months. One fine day you notice a small abrasion at the hinge point of the screen. It's hardly noticeable, so you ignore it. Next couple of days it kept getting worse and then one fine day, the screen stopped working. I can pick up calls and use the outside screen for different functions but the main screen does not work. Now here is the important part. The screen is not covered under any warranty. Even if it wasnt your fault and you used it normally. If the screen tears or breaks on its own within a month of buying it's on you. Get the Samsung rather than this. Might be more opportunities expensive but I think they are worth it. They cover screen replacement under the warranty.

Only Flip with Vanilla Android !!!

First the primary purpose of taking a flip phone was to minimize my smartphone usage and I have succeeded in it to some extent by using the external display. Also, I wanted vanilla android (as I have a good experience with Pixel devices), as such Motorola Flip was an obvious choice apart from Samsung’s flip devices. Here are my impressions of this phone: BUILD: Build quality is good, however, it can no way match the quality of usual one-piece devices. As such, people who use their phones roughly shouldn’t purchase this phone. Same holds true for people with butter fingers as this device wouldn’t survive too many drops. DISPLAY: External display is pretty useful. You can take or make calls; however, they will be on loudspeaker mode. For making calls, only contacts in your favorite's will be available and you have to selects contacts widget from external display settings first. You can also read messages and emails but you can’t respond to them. The internal display is huge and colours are nice (if saturated mode is selected) but a downgrade in comparison to my Samsung Note 10 which I used earlier. TAKE MOTOROLA’S CREASELESS CLAIM WITH A PINCH OF SALT, the crease is fairly obvious and will not bother you after sometime. CALLS: The cellular reception is excellent and the call quality is great. No call drops for me and 5g network speed is also good. PERFORMANE: Performance of the phone is decent but if you are power user, you will feel it underpowered. There are minor stutters and lags here and there but for normal users, it is manageable. CAMERA: Coming from Samsung Note 10, I feel the camera quality is downgrade but one can live with it if you want it for normal imaging. One of the issues with the camera is that it is slow and takes half a second to take a picture. Picture quality though is good but colours are muted and lifeless (unless Samsung’s boosted colours) and surprisingly night shots are better. Video quality on the other side is great. The front camera quality is good; however, the WhatsApp video call quality is terrible and I can’t explain why. May be a software update in future will fix both the camera response time and the video call quality which has been the case with Motorola devices. Some camera samples are also attached to judge for yourself. BATTERY: Battery life is OK and in most of the scenarios you will get through the day easily with a screen on time of 5-6 hours. However, it charges fairly quick with supplied 33W turbo charger. Finally, I would recommend this phone to those who have normal usage pattern and want to minimize their smartphone usage and don’t bother about having the best camera phone in the market. At present, the folding screen tech is costly affair and in comparison to Samsung’s costly flip devices Motorola does provide a usable device to the people at a decent enough cost to experience this technology.

The difference in chipset is huge. Dimensity 7300X Vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

2023 RAZR plus Owner

13.08.2024

I got the 2023 RAZR plus and the screen (not screen protector), the screen has an ugly crease in the middle 7 months after purchase. Warranty does not cover physical damage so they refuse to help, I'll have to pay out of pocket for fix (while I'm still paying off for the phone with Rogers).

Hopefully they've addressed this with the 2024 version but unfortunately only time will tell.

better chipset means nothing for this formfactor. Same for 3.2 when there is no dex. Better updates, yeah I agree, but it's not as if you're using it for >3 years. Save 500 and get new one after 3 years and you still can save more

Better chipset, better update support and USB 3.2 are already enough to justify the smaller battery. Having that superior cover display kinda defeats the purpose of the main screen.

Oh yeah, and that 'tiny screen' is just 0.2" smaller than the RAZR 50 - if you take into account the 'holes' (cameras), it's actually the Flip5 that has a bigger screen real estate.
