I've now had two of these, both being returned within a couple of weeks with overheating battery, draining it in a matter of a few hours and freezing the screen requiring a reboot - for example, fully charged at 11pm, nothing running in the background, and down to 13% by 7am when I woke up. Also, both had a weird popup problems saying that the headphone setting was above normal and do I want to continue. I hadn't set any volume changes, and the popup would not go no matter what I did, either accept or cancel buttons would not cancel it.
I might be unlucky to have two identical phones with the same issue, but either way Xiaomi's customer service is terrible! I returned the first one after ten days as I had the battery overheat and drain in a few hours 3 times, I did a factory reset but still them same. Xiaomi had it back, said they needed to check it, found it was faulty then said they were out of spare parts for it - this is in breach of their own T&C's where a replacement should be sent, or a refund. Eventually they sent the replacement, which took nearly 3 weeks from them receiving it back, and only after I rang to complain,
Now, within 14 days of the new one arriving, I'm in the same position - within the replacement or refund period, but they are saying that if they find a fault, it is down to them whether or not they refund me!!! Even then, I have to wait between 7 & 10 working days for the refund to be issued if they agree to do so.Terrible experience to say the least. I'd avoid them if my experience so far is anything to go by.
I've complained, and they've simply ignored me.

It can, the battery must have degraded. Try checking with software or in service center
